How to stage your home with color

Experts say that staged homes sell faster and for higher prices than those that are not, and paint color is a low-cost but effective way of showcasing your home. The following home staging tips and ideas will help in guiding your paint color choices.

Unlocking Red’s Potential

No matter where or how you use red, it evokes a response and makes a statement.

Whether you apply it as a modest accent or to an entire accent wall, the color red is a multifaceted hue in a designer’s toolbox. “Red packs a punch. It’s stimulating, fun and passionate,” says Valerie Steil of Marc T. Nielsen Interiors in Valparaiso, Ind. “It can provide a very rich background for artwork and for furnishing ⎯ from antiques to...  continue reading.

 Life-Transforming Color

Designer Rebeca West teaches her clients how to revitalize their lives and homes with color after divorce.

Vibrant orange walls. Sky blue ceilings. Charcoal gray accessories. For many of our clients, making color changes can be fun. But for people who have experienced the emotional trauma of divorce, color changes can also facilitate healing and renewal.

So says Seattle-based interior designer Rebecca West, who has created a specialty of sorts in helping post-divorce clients revitalize their homes — and their lives. STIR asked West, whose business was born out of her own experience with divorce, about the... continue.

Perfect Marriage

A designer creates a color compromise for a couple with seemingly irreconcilable differences.

They say love is blind. But not when it comes to wall color. Newlyweds Jeff and Kayla Gomes were eager to decorate their new townhouse on Hawaii's Oahu Island. But there was a hitch: They were far apart on the color spectrum. "My husband and I are polar opposites. I wanted bright colors, and he wanted subdued colors," says Kayla. The couple tried creating their own compromise but soon got stuck. Jeff even bought some paint in red and brown and tried to do it himself. "But I didn't know how to put it together," he says.      continue reading.

Ideas for Creating Beautiful Accent Walls

Accent walls are a great way to add color to a space and experiment with smaller doses of brighter, bolder hues.

Whether you'd like to define a living space or spotlight a treasured piece of artwork or architectural feature, an accent wall can create a striking, unique design element.

Accent walls can also help you create color flow. By using the same color in fabrics, finishes, accessories, and furnishings in adjoining rooms, you can create a seamless transition from space to space.

Accent Wall Ideas

Make a Bold Statement

Bold, colorful shades are good accent wall paint colors because they accentuate a space without overpowering it. For example, perhaps you're using bright colors in your decorative accessories throughout your space, but they seem far too bold for entire walls. Why not choose one of those colors to create an accent wall for a lively splash of vibrancy?

(TIP: Accent walls can also take away the stress of decorating a kid's room. Let your child choose a color for one wall and then choose a neutral color that you can live with for the other walls. Use decorative accessories and bedding to pick up the accent color to tie the look together.)

Create a Subtle Contrast

If you prefer a more gentle contrast, try using a deeper version of your existing wall color on one strategic wall. This can be just enough to add interest and break the monotony of a single-color space.

Choosing the Right Paint Color

To help you choose the best accent wall hue for your space, use a color from a pillow or your favorite artwork, for example, as your inspiration. What is the most appealing color to you in that piece? Does it work with the main wall color? Would you enjoy living with accessories in that same color? Whatever shade you choose, an accent wall allows you to express your own unique, confident design style. So grab a paint brush and let your imagination go!

Drawn From Nature

A spectacular setting inspires an oceanfront getaway’s colorful palette and Earth-friendly design.

Susan Drawdy wanted her two-bedroom beach condo, which overlooks a neighboring pier in San Diego and the Pacific Ocean, to be colorful, but not too beach-like. No lighthouses, no shells, no netting motifs. She wanted a no-fuss, low-maintenance, high-functioning space where she and her two boys could relax and entertain on weekends.

Drawdy was too busy to be very involved with the project, so she searched the Internet for a local designer to whom she could hand it over with confidence. She chose Laura Birns, owner of Laura Birns Design in Del Mar, Calif., because of her portfolio, her way with colors and her custom furniture designs. Drawdy set no color parameters. "I let her fly with it," she says.   continue....

Beach Beauty

A rich palette brings enduring warmth to a home by the sea.

The house was built on a sandy point – Mount Hope Bay in front, Sakonneto River behind. It made sense, then, that the owner wanted rooms with views. And the owner, New England architect Gary Graham, got them. From every room in his new Portsmouth, R.I., home, you can spy the many moods of the sea and sky.  continue...
